It’s not often that a game makes the concept of reincarnation a topic of strong reflection but that is the case here with The Deer God from Crescent Moon Games.
Currently available as an Xbox Games with Gold title but also available on other platforms, it’s an unusual title that may not be everyone’s cup of tea but has a presentation style that succeeds brilliantly.
The game places you in the position of a hunter, who through his own death in the opening sequence has been reincarnated as a deer as punishment for his transgressions as a human. His future will be determined by his actions during the course of the game which plays out like a endless runner crossed with a platformer.
How the world is portrayed in the game is perhaps it’s biggest achievement with a gorgeous pixel art style coupled with an evocative soundtrack that perfectly sets the right mood. It creates an amazing first impression.
The downside for me though is the gameplay as I just felt like I was meandering through landscapes with little urgency and even less guidance. Even with boss battles, puzzles and side quests, I just didn’t feel drawn into the game. I will admit though that it could just be my own lack of patience in it; after Rayman Legends I may be a little spoiled in my expectations of games in the genre.
If you have a little more dedication to the game than I then it’s quite possible you’ll be drawn into the beautiful world and earn the karma you need to escape your Bambi style punishment. Otherwise you may find this to be a pleasing diversion but one that won’t keep you enthralled for long.
The game is available now on Xbox One, PC and mobile.
