Doom Early Impressions

So it was with some hesitation that I picked Doom up on the digital store a couple of days ago. For one, there were no early reviews allowed due to Bethesda having an embargo on them. I actually understand why now because the servers were not activated until launch day and there is actually a pretty damn good reason to review the product as a whole.

Plenty of secrets to find.  Some of them are quite tricky to get to.

Rest easy fellow gamers – Doom is a fantastic reboot of the original game that defined the shooter genre. I can’t emphasise just how good the whole package is. I’m only a few missions through the campaign but it is a rip roaring action packed slug fest. This is no hide and wait out until your health regenerates; you actually have to keep attacking to stack up your health.  It is a fantastic throw back to the original shooters of the 90s.

The level design is excellent.

It was criticised early for the multiplayer but I find it refreshing to have an equal playing field where you get some great load outs from the get go, including a rocket launcher if you want. What most surprised me though was SnapMap.  SnapMap allows you to make your own solo, co-op and competitive multiplayer maps. The variety is staggering already and the game has only just been released.

SnapMap is a great addition to the game and will keep plenty of players occupied for quite some time.

I know it is early days but I am really impressed with Doom. It looks gorgeous on all platforms (XB1, PS4 and PC), runs up to 60fps.  It certainly seems very fluid, even on the XB1 (the platform I’m playing it on).  The weapon and creature sound effects sound great. id Software really know how to code. I highly recommend you check it out.

  1. I don’t want to be that guy, but it doesn’t keep a stable 60fps on any console. I haven’t played much Doom because of The Witcher 3. I’m preparing for the new expansion by playing through the game again.

    • I think as long as the games can achieve close to 60fps on consoles without any moments of massive slowdown they’ll be fine. At least for me it’s the games that vary the framerate too much that ruin the immersion. I suppose in this case I’d even be willing to have the game run at 30fps if they could at least guarantee a rock solid framerate… seems easier to accept any limitations as long as they are consistent.

Still working through The Witcher 3 myself… brilliant game! 🙂

    • Ah fair enough – certainly seems fast and fluid for me. I’ll modify my blog post 🙂

Love The Witcher 3 but I am still fairly fresh so I’ll just wait for the new expansion to come out.

  2. I didn’t play Doom when it came out, but I did play Wolfenstein 3D. That was one of my favorite games as a kid. I did play Doom years later, and I enjoyed it a lot. If what I heard about this new Doom is true, it will be nice to play a first-person shooter that has an old-school mentality where you don’t have to take cover all the time.

    • From what Grocs has been telling me it sounds like Doom’s campaign is pretty entertaining and reviews seem to confirm it as well. Hoping for a chance to get into it myself to be honest. 🙂
