Revisiting Nvidia’s DSR – 4k resolution on a 1080p monitor

Last year I posted up an article on just how effective Nvidia’s DSR was for Nvidia card users – Click here

Over a year on and Nvidia continue to improve this feature.  As a quick re-cap this effectively lets you do up to 4k resolutions on a traditional 1080p monitor.  I thought it was time to take another look at this and see how the new improved DSR stacks up.  I am happy to report that it is much more refined and allows you a lot more resolution options than ever before.

Various resolutions are now possible, even on a 760 GTX like mine up to 4k.  The results are truly stunning.  All of these resolutions can be turned on simply from the Nvidia Control panel, under Manage Settings.  This is a much simpler setup than before.  Let me just re-iterate, all of the 4k screenshots below were taken on my native 1080p 27″ Viewsonic Monitor.

Manage 3D settings is where you’ll find DSR.

Simply tick the resolution options.

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim looks absolutely incredible with all the great mods activated on PC and running at 4K.  The great thing is you can do away with Anti-aliasing (normally used to smooth out the rough edges) altogether because the high 4k resolution gets rid of those jaggies for you.

Here’s an example of what I have available in Skyrim now.

Skyrim 1

Skyrim looks amazing in 4k, even on my trusty 27″ 1080p monitor.

Skyrim 2

An example of great game design.  Skyrim is about five years old now and with all the mods that have been released still looks amazing.

I’ve tried a number of games, and it works really well even on the newer ones like Forza Motorsport 6: Apex (now in beta for those who want to download it from the Windows Store).  Seeing Forza Motorsport 6: Apex running in 4k (albiet not very well frame rate wise for my humble video card) makes me keen to pick up the Nividia 1070 GTX card when it comes out soon.  It is important to note though that not every game will benefit from running in 4k as it very much depends on the quality of the textures too.  I did not notice a significant difference running Elite: Dangerous at 4k DSR but that game is only 6gb in size so I would imagine the textures are not optimised for such hi-res.

Forza 6 -3

No jaggies at all here.

Great game looks even better on PC in 4k.

DSR is not a gimmick.

There is no better time to give DSR a go if you don’t have a native 4k monitor.  It really is some amazing tech.

Screenshots have not been retouched in any way.  Forza 6 screenshots have been down-sampled in game to 1080p.

  1. I hear you. I’m going to wait for later in the year when the Nvidia 1070s are well and truly out. If my current rig (3rd gen Intel cpu, 16gb ram and 700watt decent PS) can handle the card I’ll definitely get one.
