Building Shadowrun using Genesys – Part 2 (Campaign, Race and Careers)

This is a conceptual post about my journey building a Shadowrun campaign using the Genesys rule systems and how I am planning on introducing it to my players. In the second part of these articles I am looking at character options for the game. Working with the game setting planning there will be timeframe specific races and generational gameplay.

The Shadowrun world for this campaign will be a blending of the actual Shadowrun universe, the android universe and some custom content to create some surprises. The earlier storylines will be used to style how the setting evolves. Characters can start with any of the generations, giving them the ability to shape the future generations.

Note: After discussing this concept with my Shadowrun players, the only interest from my players was the equivalent of end game content and not building the storyline. They wanted a mechanics based game and not a story based game unless all game mechanic content options were unlocked at the start. My concept of an evolving setting where options open up as the story continues is not possible with my planned gaming group. I am unsure if I will return to Shadowrun as I have grown tired of mechanic only play.

Generation 1 – 6th Age of Magic

Racial Options: Dwarf, Elf, Gnome, Human

Career Options: Academic, Bounty Hunter, Con Artist, Courier, Disciple, Investigator, Mage, Primalist, Ristie, Roughneck, Runner, Soldier, Tech

In 2012 the world changed and magic returned to the world but it was subtle and only a trickle and went mostly unnoticed by the rest of the world. Across the globe children were being born who have aspects of the mythological dwarves, elves and gnomes.

Set in the years 2020 to 2035 these are the characters who were born in the age of magic and live through the return of magic to the world. The first dwarves, elves and gnomes are made public and the world deals with the emergence of dragons and other creatures of legend. Non humans become playable part way through this storyline as they would only be 8 years old at the start.

Corporations are beginning to rise above governments in dominating the world economy. The great ghost dance causing the split of the United States into separate entities. You hear about corporations experimenting on their own people to make better workers.

Space travel comes to the forefront with the exploration of the moon and first people to arrive on Mars. Most hackers are still using decks and not accessing it directly.

Generation 2 – The Corporation Generation

Racial Options: Clones, Cyborg, Dwarf, Elf, G-Mod, Gnome, Human

Career Options: Academic, Bounty Hunter, Con Artist, Courier, Disciple, Investigator, Mage, Primalist, Ristie, Roughneck, Runner, Soldier, Tech

Set in the years 2035 to 2050, Corporations start genetically making their own workers and augmenting their existing ones. The first forages into the solar system begins with structures being built on the moon and piloted missions to other planets take place, including mining operations in the asteroid belt. The first of the virtual reality hackers appears.

Generation 3 – The Matrix Generation

Racial Options: Bioroid, Catfolk, Clones, Cyborg, Dwarf, Elf, G-Mod, Gnome, Human, Loonie, Orc, Troll

Career Options: Academic, Bounty Hunter, Con Artist, Courier, Disciple, Investigator, Mage, Primalist, Ristie, Roughneck, Runemage, Runner, Soldier, Tech

Set in the years 2050 to 2065. After the first big crash the web is rebuilt as the Matrix. The building of autonomous robots for hard labour and dangerous conditions begins. A magical flare-up has caused goblinisation with the creation of three new races, Orcs, Trolls and Catfolk.

The establishment of a base city for a tether into space begins construction while an asteroid from the belt is diverted to earth to serve as the terminus of the tether. Workers begin to settle on the moon in preparation for construction in orbit and the maintenance of spacecraft without having to land on earth. With the Matrix, the hackers have more power than before.

Generation 4 – The Technomancer Generation

Racial Options: Bioroid, Catfolk, Clones, Cyborg, Dwarf, Elf, G-Mod, Gnome, Human, Loonie, Orc, Troll

Career Options: Academic, Bounty Hunter, Con Artist, Courier, Disciple, Investigator, Mage, Primalist, Ristie, Roughneck, Runner, Soldier, Tech, Technomancer

Set in the years 2065 to 2080. The construction of the space tether and the settlement of other locations in the solar system. The building of midpoint and the corporate court provides access to space for colonists. Hackers have started to access technology without an interface.

Generation 5 – The Beanstalk Generation

Racial Options: Bioroid, Catfolk, Clones, Cyborg, Dwarf, Elf, G-Mod, Gnome, Human, Loonie, Orc, Troll

Career Options: Academic, Bounty Hunter, Con Artist, Courier, Disciple, Investigator, Mage, Primalist, Ristie, Roughneck, Runner, Soldier, Tech, Technomancer

Set in the years 2080 to 2095. Dealing with the repercussions of the second great crash and the operation of midway and the beanstalk. Colony ships start to head out to pre-prepared locations around the solar system. The ability to use technology without an interface is just another variation on the magic of the world.

Generation 6 – The Solar Generation

Racial Options: Bioroid, Catfolk, Clones, Cyborg, Dwarf, Elf, G-Mod, Gnome, Human, Loonie, Orc, Troll

Career Options: Academic, Bounty Hunter, Con Artist, Courier, Disciple, Investigator, Mage, Primalist, Ristie, Roughneck, Runner, Soldier, Tech, Technomancer

Set in the years 2095+. Colonies are springing up all over the solar system as magic opens up portals to other realms. Stories beyond this point are truly up to my players and how we are progressing.

Racial Options:

There are quite a few base races available from the Genesys, Terrinoth and Android books that will not require too much extra work. I intend for there to be differences for which time frame they became active in the story

Bioroid – With the rise of Artificial Intelligence in the setting, a bioroid is an autonomous robotic life form that is sentient and bound by the faulty laws of robotics believed to preserve humanity. While bioroids are not really part of the setting, AI’s and drones exist, so having bipedal human looking drones is a good advancement to have.

Catfolk – There are two catfolk in the Terrinoth book, and while catfolk do not exist in the standard Shadowrun campaign setting, but I thought it would make a good addition to the game. This would come about with the rise of orc and trolls in the setting.

Clones – With the advancement of technology, companies were able to create their own ideal workers in their own image and this was where clones originated. While not in the original Shadowrun, they fit the concept very well for a corporate drone.

Cyborg – Making the most of technology advancements, people have upgraded their bodies with tech to make themselves better

Dwarf – There are two dwarves in the Terrinoth book and I will take those and turn them into corporate and free dwarves.

Elf – There are four elves in the Terrinoth book and I will take those and turn them into the two elven nations, the privileged and the common elves.

G-Mod – While a cyborg is about replacing the human parts, a G-Mod is about altering the DNA of a person to do more either subtle changes or obvious visual changes.

Gnome – There are two gnomes in the Terrinoth book and while they are variants of the Dwarf in the traditional Shadowrun game, I am considering having them as a base race in this version of the game.

Human – Known as the natural in the Android book this would be the standard human.

Loonie – Born on the moon, these people are a world apart and are adapted to live in space.

Orc – There are three orcs in the Terrinoth book, and I will take those and turn them into Underground, Common and Corporate orcs.

Racial Options to be created:

Troll – While I have no troll pre-defined, I will be able to put one together based on the other racial options above. This will wait until I have a more defined write up for each race. I can also pull some information from Star Wars rules system to give me some ideas.

Career Options:

Academic – You can research with the best of them, this is the knowledge specialist, though not all knowledges will be available from the start.

Bounty Hunter – You specialise in hunting people, so you have the skills to match.

Con Artist – You specialise in making people believe you.

Courier – You specialise in getting things from one place to another, be it objects or people you don’t care.

Disciple – A character who specialises in Divine magic, belief in a higher being that provides their powers. This does not have to be a specific religion. Usually belongs to a church or cult.

Investigator – You specialise in discovering or finding secrets.

Mage (Hermetic) – A character who specialises in Arcana magic, studies at a university or with another mage.

Primalist (Shaman) – A character who specialises in Primal magic, usually self trained or with a tribal teacher.

Ristie – You specialise in being rich, yep that’s it. rich…

Roughneck – You specialise in your muscles and making them work for you.

Runemaster – A character who specialises in Rune magic, using artefacts to power and supplement their magic. This is an extra option taken from Terrinoth not normally in Shadowrun, but I believe would be a good addition to the system I am putting together.

Runner – You specialise in using computers to get what you want.

Singer – A character who specialises in Verse magic, using their voices to power their magic. This is a extra option taken from Terrinoth not normally in shadowrun, also a good addition to the system.

Soldier – You specialise in working with weapons, and being part of a squad.

Tech -You specialise in technology, building, repairing, subverting its all the same to you.

Career Options to be Created:

Adept – A character can access magic like the force in the Star Wars RPG

Technomancer – A character who specialises in digital magic, using technology without needing an interface. A new skill will be created to cover this.

Conclusion

I am still excited about this project, as it is still early days and a lot more work to go before it is ready to play, I am looking forward to building more posts in the future.
