Thoughts on the Ghost Recon Breakpoint announcement

One thing Ubisoft is doing well is keeping their games fresh and relevant and they’ve done a good job of that with Ghost Recon Wildlands. I’m still playing the game as there’s a tonne of missions to complete and plenty of items to find and unlock. On top of that they’ve added some cool new missions and Easter Eggs referencing other games of “The Greater Clancyverse” that reward you with unique gear or hint at what’s to come in the future.

In the case of the last bit of free DLC for Wildlands it looks like it’ll actually lead you into the next game, judging by what you see in the trailer below. A sequel was inevitable but I hadn’t expected it to be announced so soon after something that had rolled out only weeks ago but here it is… Ghost Recon Breakpoint!

Quoting from Ubisoft NA’s YouTube page:

You are a Ghost, an elite spec ops soldier. Put your skills to test against your toughest enemy yet – your own brothers-in-arms. Play Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Breakpoint when it launches on PS4, Xbox One, and PC on October 4, 2019

The trailer really creates the impression that this time around the Ghosts are going to be on the receiving end with them being up against both a technologically and numerically superior force. Considering how much you made drones work to your advantage in Wildlands this is a change I didn’t expect. The gameplay trailer below gives a stronger impression of what to expect and I do like what I see. The third person camera used in it really gives off a Gears of War vibe and with the environment seeming to be much denser it does help increase that feeling of being surrounded. Injuries appear to have substance to them now beyond a red screen with your character visibly impaired until they fully heal up.

If I were to list the games that immediately sprung to mind from what I’ve seen so far I’d get:

  1. Gears of War – that camera perspective and the main character now seems to be leaning on the Marcus Fenix playbook.
  2. Far Cry – the jungle environments mixed with high tech makes me think of the first game… minus the hang gliders which is OK as I was terrible with those.
  3. Metal Gear Solid – high tech looking bad guys taking over an island for their own nefarious plans kind of seems like it’s been done before.

Jokes (?) aside this is looking great and it’s less than six months until we all get to see it for ourselves. I’m looking forward to it. 🙂
