Looking back 2014 – Best and worst movies and television

When it comes to films and television two things became clear; Marvel were on a winning streak and the best of television was when it challenged itself and viewers expectations. And then there’s Game of Thrones which continues to show why it holds the crown for the most pirated television series on the Internet… but that’s another story. It was the best of films…

Shootin', lootin' and being awesome.

Shootin’, lootin’ and being awesome.

Fantastic: Guardians of the Galaxy. Surprisingly good: X-men Days of Future Past. Better than expected: Captain America: The Winter Soldier.

Guardians of the Galaxy.  “I can’t stop this feeling….” Great film, brilliant cast and true to form.

– Kitarakae

Captain America: The Winter Soldier genuinely surprised me with just how prepared Marvel were to throw their shiny universe under the bus. It made for a film with real consequence which really is unexpected of franchise films. With that and Guardians of the Galaxy, it’s been a good year for comic book fans.

– The Night Owl

The films already mentioned were great fun but the top movie for the year for me was Dawn of the Planet of the Apes. I thought Rise of the Planet of the Apes back in 2011 was pretty damn good but the sequel ramped it up a notch and ended up being even better. A decent book to film adaptation that is also worthy of attention is Gone Girl with Ben Affleck and Rosamund Pike. Riveting and disturbing in equal doses and a great return to form for David Fincher of Se7en fame.

… and the worst of films…

The Infinite Monkey Theorem may lead to Shakespeare but if those same monkeys were in the midst of a drug induced seizure they’d probably end up with Sharknado 2: The Second One. I still watched it and even then am somehow enamoured with it. Maybe I was having a drug induced seizure too…

– The Night Owl

For me it would probably have to be Lucy starring Scarlet Johannsson. I can’t believe this film came from the same director as Leon. I didn’t think it was even possible to make a movie that convoluted, dumb and so over the top.

– Grocs

Lucy would have to rate as one of the worst films I have ever seen. It was so bad I could only withstand 30 minutes of it before trying to pry my eyes out with a spoon.

Maleficent.

Rocking the tube…

Matthew McConaughey looking a little worse for wear in True Detective.

Sons of Anarchy, Sherlock, Black Mirror, and True Detective are all must watches.

– Kitarakae

Like Kitarakae I was late in the game watching True Detective but thought that was some of the best writing and production values I have seen on TV in a long time. Sons of Anarchy finished well (unlike the awful final episode to Dexter) but for me the highlight for 2014 was Boardwalk Empire. This prohibition era drama is just some of the best TV drama out there. I am about to start Season 5 (the final season) and can’t wait.

Game of Thrones and The Walking Dead continue to wreak their own kind of havoc on audiences. In addition we got to see True Blood finish on the right note and Sherlock produce a season ending tease that just made you pray it is the truth. I’ve also discovered and enjoyed Black Sails, The Musketeers and Orange is the New Black… so I’m going to be watching a lot of TV in 2015.

– The Night Owl

I want to see more of: Intelligence, Arrow, Flash, Black Sails, The 100, Star Wars Rebels, Beware the Batman. The Musketeers was a surprisingly good take on the story. Both Gotham and Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is also excellent. And Grimm and Lost Girl are getting better each season.

… and wrecking it

Not about this dome...

Not about this dome…

Under the Dome; I suppose it worked for The Simpsons Movie, why not make it a series?

– The Night Owl

Under the Dome felt like it was missing something.

– TheDarkElf007

I tried to watch Arrow. That spoon looked pretty good then too.

– Kitarakae

Archer Season 5 made a good show quite simply terrible. I did not like the direction it took at all. Let’s hope that Season 6 out this year will go back to what made Archer great in the first place.
