With the recent digital launches classic Star Wars games, we’ve had some discussions here about how to get them looking their best on modern systems.
Usually the main issue people encounter with these old games is stretching of the graphics as the majority of modern systems are using 16:9 (widescreen) displays, compared to 4:3 displays in the good old days.
Fortunately, Nvidia cards have a nice feature bundled away in their graphics drivers that make it a quick fix. Please note that the steps here are for Windows and specifically Nvidia cards – the feature may be present on other products.
- Open the Nvidia Control Panel
- Under Display, select Adjust desktop size and position
- From there, ensure the scaling mode is set to Aspect Ratio and then check the box to Override the scaling mode set by games and programs
There is an option to perform the scaling either on the display or GPU but that is an optional setting which you can tinker with later to judge any performance/quality improvements.
Once those changes are made you should find your old games appearing in much better proportions on your new PC. However you may need to uncheck the override box when you’ve finished as it may impact on how newer games will display.
