As reported on Ars Technica, existing owners of Elite Dangerous will soon be able to get a Steam key from within their game; allowing them to install the game through Valve’s service. This feature will be available from May 28 and is open to all owners and backers of the game who bought it previously through the Frontier Developments website.
At least in my case, I hope this will mean game updates could be handled via Steam rather than the default game client hitting Frontier’s servers, though that connection is still required to actually play. In Australia, Steam downloads are often unmetered so being able to leverage that service can lead to substantial savings.
More details of the process will be provided by Frontier closer to the date. In addition, the new Power Play expansion will go live on May 20 which adds a stronger story element to the universe by allowing players to interact more closely with the game’s factions.
