guilty pleasure
noun
something, such as a film, television programme, or piece of music, that one enjoys despite feeling that it is not generally held in high regard.
With so many movies readily accessible now it probably means you could always find something new to watch. However, I bet the odds are good that you have a movie or two that you like to watch over and over again… perhaps much to the annoyance of your friends and family. π
This came to my mind recently thanks to Pacific Rim – whenever I see it playing on a movie channel I can’t help but watch it again even though I have it on disc. Alarm bells might be ringing in someone’s head out there as they ask “Why?”. Despite some terrible accents and dialogue that might just cancel the apocalypse on its own (or set it off) it’s one of those movies that just looks and sounds spectacular when you have the lights down and the speakers up. On top of that it has a really great soundtrack and a giant robot big enough to swing a ship like a baseball bat.
The Honest Trailer for the movie says it far better than I can:
It’s not just that one particular movie though – I think my wife is in constant fear of what else appears in rotation on the movie channels because she knows if I catch sight of something I like I’ll switch over to it at the slightest opportunity. π
Much like how people like to stick to their musical tastes to help get them in the appropriate mood for what they are doing, both safe and not so safe for work (!), movies can be a great distraction from the outside world but I think it is a little more simple here as the goal is usually to just be entertained. Unlike having the radio on, it’s much less likely you’ll be watching The Fast and the Furious whilst performing a heart transplant.
I think I certainly have a “type” of movie that I fall back on to get my fix. Mad Max: Fury Road has enough dialogue to fill the corner of a postcard but is incredible to see in action. Lockout is a modern Escape from New York with an even funnier hero. Die Hard is the greatest Christmas movie of all time. John Wick‘s rapid pace and gunfights are totally unique and damn cool. And Star Wars never, ever gets old.

For me it’s the Resident Evil movies. I actually saw Resident Evil Apocalypse before I played any of the games. I enjoyed the movie so much (Milla Jovovich is such a badass!) I got into the game series. I know the internet hates them, but they are my ONE exception to my “Game movies are terrible” opinion, haha. I’ll see The Final Chapter whenever it goes on Netflix though.

I think Resident Evil series is a great example of guilty pleasure movies! π We had a marathon of them on a local channel during the last week to coincide with the new movie. If they make you happy it doesn’t matter what anyone else thinks. π
