Less than two months ago, Microsoft introduced Games with Gold; an initiative that rewards Xbox Live Gold Subscription holders with a free game to download (of their choosing) every two weeks.
It can very much be seen as an answer to the PlayStation Plus scheme that allows access to a selection of games for as long as you remain a subscriber.
Though only a single game is available per period, once the game is bought, it is yours regardless of your future subscription status.
Though initially it may seem of less value to gamers, consider the amount of players using short term Xbox Live passes or even the 48 hour cards bundled with games. The bonus of finding they can also get a free game in the bargain is a winning proposition that could encourage longer term subscriptions.
It’s a subtle value add to Xbox Live but it also fits within the existing system nicely.
It has even convinced me to try downloading full games from the service too which could be seen as helping to encourage that behaviour for Xbox One’s more digital future.
With Fable 3, Defense Grid, Assassins Creed 2, Crackdown and Dead Rising 2 already given away, Xbox 360 owners have plenty to look forward to in the coming months regardless of whether they upgrade to Xbox One or not.
