June 2016 Games with Gold (Xbox) gives The Crew and XCOM another chance to shine

After much speculation, Xbox’s Major Nelson confirmed the games appearing in June’s Games with Gold releases.

  • Goat Simulator – June 1-30, Xbox One
  • The Crew – June 16-July 15, Xbox One
  • Super Meat Boy – June 1-15, Xbox 360
  • XCOM: Enemy Unknown – June 16-30, Xbox 360

Goat Simulator is a personal favourite thanks to time spent playing it with my son. It’s a silly sandbox that exists purely to provide some very odd and entertaining scenarios to wreak havoc in.

The Crew received some harsh criticism at launch but won over Grocs and thanks to some substantial updates it has become a much better game and is certainly worth revisiting, especially at the price.

Super Meat Boy is a tough platformer that made its console début on the Xbox 360 and whose development was covered in the documentary Indie Game: The Movie. It doesn’t shy away from those indie roots by allowing players to unlock characters from other indie developer’s games.

Lastly, XCOM: Enemy Unknown is a reboot of the long dormant franchise, handled superbly by the strategy gods at Firaxis. It’s an enjoyable and challenging squad combat game with RPG elements that really gives players a solid challenge. Hopefully its release here is a sign that the sequel may be finally arriving on console. I’m keeping my fingers crossed.

Backwards compatibility really helps make this month’s games a great value addition for all Xbox gamers collections and they are definitely worth checking out.
