There was a lot revealed recently during the DC FanDome event and though it was mostly known ahead of schedule there was still plenty of excitement from fans when the news officially dropped. My own expectations approaching it were mixed but at least from what I’ve seen I’m excited to see what’s coming. Below is just a couple of things I wanted to talk about… there was plenty more there but these were the ones that really resonated with me.

It used to be talked about how fans of the original Star Trek kept the series alive even when the networks were against it. That dedication eventually turned it into a franchise. The same may be said of Zack Snyder’s Justice League – a film “revision” that should not exist yet somehow has been given a chance after year of online persuasion from the director, cast and fans.

I wasn’t a big fan of the original movie and there’s been a lot covered in the press about all the problems faced during its production but seeing this I’m actually really curious to find out what the end result is. Maybe it’s the possibility of a movie having its own redemption arc… certainly not the first movie to have a new cut improve them but I don’t think there’s never been anything like it on this level. It’s going to be broken up into 4 one hour episodes on the HBO Max service which likely means it’ll appear here in Australia via Foxtel. A movie version was discussed but we may have to wait a little longer for that.

What I really liked about the trailer for The Batman was it shows that above all else, this is still Batman. It’s been covered elsewhere that it’s being approached as if it is a “Year Two” kind of story where the characters are already established (to a degree) but with space to grow so there’s no need to go the origin route again which is fair choice as a number of Batman films have already covered this and it’s not something that really changes at this point in time (pre Flashpoint anyway).

Considering this is still in production (shut down during the pandemic) it’s an impressive trailer and looks like Bruce Wayne/Batman is safely in Robert Pattinson’s hands judging from the brutal takedown at the end!

A follow up to Suicide Squad seemed hard to anticipate as despite the movie doing well the critical reception wasn’t great. With James Gunn in the director’s chair now it might be a different take and judging from what’s been seen so far my early guess is that we’re going to see a lot of the squad live up to it’s name. We only got a small taste of that in the first movie with Slipknot dying early but with a larger cast of characters this time it seems only natural (and a waste) to not want to pick off a whole lot of them.

I’m not saying it’ll happen but with the multitude of villains and crims that have filled comic pages over the years there’s plenty of cannon fodder for a film like this and it’d be something quite different if we saw a movie so willing to snuff them out with reckless abandon. Hopefully The Suicide Squad delivers. 🙂

With cinemas still in lockdown in my home state it’ll still be a while before seeing movies in the outside world is a possibility again (no Tenet for me unfortunately) so I at least have these to look forward to in the coming year!
