As per our previous blog post the votes have come in and I’ll break it down over three categories: My GOTY, Night Owl’s GOTY and GOTY as voted by the readers.
Grocs’ Game for 2016: Dark Souls 3

I’m looking imposing in my heavy ancient armour.
Dark Souls 3 may not have surpassed the original Dark Souls in terms of originality but in set design, scope and solid multiplayer it surpassed the original in spades. The creature and set pieces were just a cut above even Dark Souls 2 and just reminded you how superior it is to other games that have tried to copy it (Lords of the Fallen being a recent example). The difficulty level is still present but being able to summon up to three other companions willing to assist helped with the steep learning curve. It is because of the amazing gameplay, awesome enemies and bosses, great level design and amazing and original co-op gameplay that Dark Souls 3 gets my GOTY for 2016.
Night Owl’s Game for 2016: Forza Horizon 3

Forza Horizon 3 Lamborghini on Beach
I’m not much of a racing game fan to be honest – I mainly have the Forza Motorsport series in my collection so that I could get into a few races with friends online. The only techniques I could regularly display usually involved running Grocs off the road and even then I couldn’t win the races.
However with the Forza Horizon franchise up to its third iteration, I think I’ve got a series that I can be happy to just drive around in and not feel like lack of technique is holding me back. It’s much like Test Drive Unlimited in that respect but with a bit of a Top Gear vibe thrown in too thanks to a few unique event races thrown into the mix.
With its Australian setting making me feel right at home, Forza Horizon 3 is likely to remain my top pick for a racing game for some time to come… at least until the next game arrives. 😉

TLNS Readers Game for 2016: Uncharted 4

I really can’t wait to play this.
Amazingly neither myself or Night Owl have had the pleasure of playing this amazing game. It received the most votes by you, our reader. No doubt I will finally delve into this amazing game later in the year when I finally get around to picking up a PS4 Pro. Following the latest adventures of Nathan Drake, this game garnered great reviews due to the amazing graphics, story and level design.
Finally the winners of some Gears of War 360 series codes go to Drakulus and Particlebit. Congratulations! I’ll be in touch with regards to those codes. Thanks to all who voted.
I enjoyed Uncharted 4 but ultimately, it didn’t make my top 5. It’s a truly fantastic Uncharted game, take from that what you will.

I think that opinion is totally fair – not everyone is going to enjoy the same games at a similar level. Unlike Grocs (who is a fan of the series), Uncharted 4 doesn’t interest me but I’m happy to accept that others really like it too. 🙂

What it does, it does really well. I adore the series for its narrative and characters, I just find the actual gameplay to be a little too samey. It was probably my 11th favourite game from last year.

As a matter of interest – what were your top 5 for 2016?

I *think* I ended up with some combination of Superhot, Virginia, F12016, Overwatch and INSIDE.

Thanks for the heads up on those games. I haven’t played Superhot or Virginia but have heard good things.

I played the demo of Superhot a couple of times and really like the concept – it’s definitely on my “need to play” list! 🙂

Nice list of games. I tried Uncharted at a friend’s house and didn’t like it :).
I’ve only played a single Forza game in my life. Not big on racing games unless it’s Mario Kart.
I have almost 300 hours in Dark Souls III. My goty of 2016 is Pokemon Sun/Moon followed very closely by Xcom 2.

Still yet to play X-Com 2 (need to finish 1 first). Glad to hear you like Dark Souls 3 as well 🙂

I’m a huge Dark Souls fan. Been into it since Demon’s Souls 🙂

Same Drakulus. I’ve played all of them. I still think Dark Souls is my favourite, mainly because of the brute difficulty of Sen’s Fortress. 🙂
I really tried to love Bloodborne but I didn’t think it was nearly as good as the Dark Souls series. Perhaps that is because my character build is usually weapon and shield.

I’ve never played Bloodborne. I don’t own a console so all I have is my PC. My usual build is a big ass weapon, and small parry shield, or sorcerer.
