Outlast: Whistleblower (The Late Mini Review)

I honestly thought I had seen everything there was in a horror video game. Then I played Outlast: Whistleblower and realised there were more horrific images than I had ever come across before.

You play Waylon Park, the whistle blower of the title, in Red Barrels DLC prequel. For those who haven’t played Outlast, effectively Waylon is the one who sent out the incriminating evidence via email that led your character from the first game to visit Mount Massive Asylum.

Red Barrels has done an admirable job of making the DLC even more twisted and disturbing than the base game. Without giving anything away it has one of the more disturbing Point of View (POV) scenes I have ever played in a video game. I almost couldn’t watch it, it was that damn horrifying. A mad bastard known as “The Groom” is the ghoul behind the grisly scenes. It is terrifying and completely unnerving.

The Groom

The Groom is one of the most terrifying characters – period.

The surrounds are familiar but you approach them from an entirely different way. It weaves a more intricate story so that you pick up additional information about what was going on in the asylum. Sound is even more impressive and you’ll be finding places to hide at every opportunity. You’ll be listening for tell tale sounds of your pursuers and using every hiding spot you can think of.

This is a great bit of DLC and it expands the original game by 3-5 hours. If you enjoy playing horror games this is up there as one of the creepiest and disturbing. Play the original Outlast, then play Outlast: Whistleblower and you won’t be disappointed. Just don’t go playing it just before you go to sleep, or suffer nightmares you will.

  1. I haven’t actually been able to play the outlast games but anytime I watch a gameplay of it and there’s a major creepy jump scare I end up hiding under the covers. I think whistle-blower for me made Outlast scarier because we had a look at the mind of one of the most psychotic people in the asylum. So I definitely agree with what your saying especially the part about not playing before bed.

  2. Yes it was a very memorable game. I’ll probably wait for the next Xbox sale and pick up Outlast 2. Will definitely play it during the day though 🙂
